Your Questions Answered

According to the ATO, you don’t need an ABN to work as a sole trader. You can use your TFN, and not all people are eligible for an ABN (when their income is below $75K). That being said, there are many benefits to setting yourself up properly with an ABN (if you are eligible). Having an ABN has benefits:
  • You can avoid withholding tax
  • You will be able to register for GST
  • You can register a business name
  • You can register for a .com.au domain name.
Your tax obligations will be dependent on your situation. If you earn less than 75K, we simply lodge a tax return once a year. If you run a business and are registered for GST, you must report your earnings and GST with the tax office. If you employ people to work for you, you must withhold tax and pay their super. If your turnover is over $75K (excluding GST), you’re required to register for GST and regularly report to the ATO. Talk to us about your current situation, and we’ll be able to tell you what your obligations are and even help you get set up properly.
Yes, you can. We’ll be able to help you understand what you can and can’t claim, as well as how to frame it for the ATO to keep things discrete and confidential.
You are not required to pay GST on your earnings as a sex worker unless your annual turnover exceeds $75K (excluding GST). However, you will need to pay income tax on your earnings.
Tax laws allow the ATO to impose penalties on Australians who are dishonest with the ATO about their income and who do not meet their tax obligations. The severity of the penalties will depend on how dishonest you’ve been (how much income you’ve withheld and for how long).
Whether you are working for an agency or are working independently, there are similar deductions you would be able to claim. Chat to the team at Figure it Out and we’ll assist you.
